Women's lacrosse keeps rolling with win over Cabrini

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The season-opening win streak reached four for the Haverford College women's lacrosse team after Wednesday afternoon's 14-8 non-conference victory over visiting Cabrini College.

Josie Ferri's four goals and two assists led Haverford (4-0) but Jen Schmidt scored three times while three other Fords netted two goals apiece to help spark the win over Cabrini (0-1) at Swan Field.

The Fords broke out to a 6-2 halftime lead over the Cavaliers and took the momentum into the break, but Cabrini was the team that came out on fire after the intermission putting two quick goals up on the scoreboard to battle back into the contest.

Each time the visitors pulled to within two scores, though, Haverford had an answer.

Alexa Pesce's seventh of the season broke Cabrini's early second half momentum to put the Fords back up by three at 7-4.

After a Jamie O'Hanlon score made it 7-6, Schmidt notched her seventh of the season to push the lead to three again. The Cavaliers answered back with a score but Ferri made it 9-6 with her second of the game.

After an Erin Nollen score cut the margin back to two, Haverford reeled off four unanswered goals to ice the game.

Schmidt scored the first two in the four-goal streak, both times cutting hard to the front of the net and getting perfect feeds from teammate Alexa Pesce from behind the goal.

Nora Proops and Ferri closed out the string which put the Fords up 13-7 with less than four minutes to play.

The Cavaliers would put one more in goal but, once again, the Fords and Ferri had the answer as the sophomore closed out the scoring with her 17th of the year.

Leah Hammerschlag earned the win in goal for Haverford making four saves. Schmid of Cabrini took the loss but made seven stops.

Cabrini's attack was led by Nollen and Armand Alexandrowicz who each scored three goals.

Ball control and offensive pressure leaned heavily in favor of the Fords in the win. Haverford outshot Cabrini by a 33-17 margin and held the visitors to less than 50 percent (9-of-19) in clear attempts while the Fords made good on 12-of-17.

Though the Cavaliers ended up with a 24-22 lead in ground balls, Haverford's Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds led all players with eight in the game.

Haverford continues the Main Line theme in its next outing, a Saturday, March 13 game at Eastern University beginning at Noon.
