Women’s lacrosse opens season with impressive, 17-7, win over Susquehanna

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's lacrosse team kicked off the 2010 season with a 17-7 victory over visiting Susquehanna University at Swan Field Saturday afternoon. Haverford held a 6-2 lead at the half, but poured in 11 goals in the final 30 minutes.

Josie Ferri and Jen Schmidt scored four goals each for Haverford (1-0). Alexa Pesce and Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds both scored three apiece. Perrin Downing scored twice and Kenny Likes added one in the first collegiate contest for both players. Pesce also handed out four assists to finish the game with seven points.

Sarah Wright and Erin Dyer each scored two goals for Susquehanna (1-0). Three different Crusaders scored one goal.

The Fords held a distinct advantage in shots (31-17) and draw controls (17-8). Coincidentally the draw controls Haverford won by period were equal to its goals scored.

In the second half the teams traded the first six goals, but the Fords scored two-in-a-row to go ahead 10-5 with just under 18 minutes left. Haverford then finished the game scoring seven of the final eight goals.

Leah Hammerschlag and Siobhan Neitzel each played one half in goal. Hammerschlag was credited with the win, but Neitzel made three saves. Abbie Handerhan had seven stops between the pipes for the Crusaders.

The Scarlet and Black are home this Wednesday, hosting the University of Scranton at 4 p.m.
