No. 16 Babson holds off visiting Fords in non-conference action

BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Haverford College women's lacrosse team out scored No. 16 Babson College during second half play, but it wasn't enough to overcome a seven-goal halftime deficit in Thursday's 15-10 non-conference loss to the Beavers.

Both Josie Ferri and Perrin Downing scored three goals apiece for Haverford (3-1) but Babson (2-1) countered with a combined 11 markers from Colleen Mulligan and Jamie Spang.

Downing gave the visiting Fords the lead with a goal in the third minute of the game. Alexa Pesche assisted on the tally.

Babson answered with a goal less than a minute later to knot things up, then added a pair of goals 18 seconds apart in the 21st minute to grab a two-goal advantage.

Downing scored again to trim the deficit to one but the Beavers reeled off six unanswered goals to take command of first half play.

Trailing 10-3 coming out of the intermission, Haverford got another score from Downing which was followed by a Megan Gallagher goal to pull some momentum in the Fords' direction.

After Mulligan scored her fourth of the game, Ferri put two into the back of the cage to pull Haverford within four at 11-7. Spang and Mulligan teamed up for consecutive goals, though, to stretch the Beavers' edge back out to five.

Ferri, Pesche and Grace Stockbower then netted back-to-back-to-back goals for the Fords to pull within three, but that was as close as they would come over the final seven minutes.

Shots were relatively even over the course of the game as the Beavers finished with only a 27-25 advantage, but it was the Fords who owned the edge in shots on goal with a 21-20 lead.

Haverford welcomes Drew University to Swan Field for its next game, another non-conference tilt, Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
