Fords outscore Cardinals in second half but fall to No. 11 Catholic

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's lacrosse team more than doubled its goal output from the first to the second half Wednesday afternoon against 11th-ranked Catholic University but fell, 14-11, to the visiting Cardinals in a non-conference match-up at Swan Field.

The Fords (7-4) notched eight goals during second-half play and held Catholic (7-2) to five, but a 9-3 halftime deficit proved to be too large of a hill to climb for the hosts.

After Catholic stretched their advantage to 11-3 early in the second half with a pair of goals less than 90 seconds into the stanza, Haverford was able to turn the momentum beginning with Josie Ferri's 36th goal of the season.

Ferri added another marker less than a minute later then Perrin Downing, with her 15th of the season, made it three in-a-row for the home team after only 51 more seconds.

Catholic was able to break the string with back-to-back scores but the Fords countered with another stretch of three unanswered goals to pull within four at 13-9 with a little less than 20 minutes remaining in the game.

The Cardinals played for time-eating possession over the remainder of the game, though, running down the clock and slowing the Fords' come-back. The visitor's added one more goal and Downing scored twice more before time ran out on the rally.

Ferri led the Fords offensively with four goals and Downing added three. Mary Swarthout's five goals spearheaded the Catholic attack.

The Fords head back into Centennial Conference action with their next outing, a Saturday home contest against Bryn Mawr College.
