Fords grab first win of the season

Fords grab first win of the season

MADISON, N.J. - Josie Ferri scored three goals to help the Haverford College women's lacrosse team secure its first victory of the season as it took down host Drew University, 10-8, on Saturday afternoon in non-conference play.

The Fords even their record at 1-1 with the win while the Rangers fall to 0-2.

Haverford jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Jen Schmidt opened the scoring less than a minute into the contest and Alexis Bond tallied another, two and a half minutes later. After Drew tied the game at 2-2, the two squads traded goals throughout the remainder of the half until Diana Perry struck on a free position attempt with 26 ticks on the clock to give the Fords a 7-6 lead at intermission.

Both teams buckled down on defense to begin the second half as the score went unchanged over the first 10 minutes.

Finally, Haverford broke through on a goal by Kenny Likes with just under 20 minutes left in the contest which staked the Fords to a two-goal advantage. The Rangers answered six minutes later on a tally by Madison Jerhoff to again close the gap to one but Ferri's third goal of the afternoon, followed by another Schmidt score less than a minute later, squelched thoughts of a Drew comeback as Haverford went ahead 10-7 and held on for the victory.

Ferri added two assists to finish with five points on the day. Likes and Schmidt both chipped in with two goals while Perry, Alexa Pesce and Bond added one apiece.

Lindsay Fry led the Rangers with three goals and one assist.

Leah Hammerschlag earned the win for the Fords with six saves in the contest. Christiana Carlini, called on for nine saves, took the loss for Drew.

Haverford went 2-of-2 on man up opportunities during the game, while the Rangers did not have any extra man chances.

The win by the Fords is the first with head coach Lauren Wray at the helm.

Haverford faces the second of three-straight road games when it travels to Washington and Lee University for a non-conference tilt on Wednesday afternoon starting at 4:30 p.m.
