Ferri named to Philly Inquirer academic all-area team for third time

PHILADELPHIA - Haverford College senior Josie Ferri has been voted onto the Philadelphia Inquirer 2012 Academic All-Area Women's Lacrosse Team as announced Tuesday by the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association (Philly-SIDA).

The team, comprised of athletes who are at least in their second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better, is voted on by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

The inclusion to the academic all-area team adds another honor to a growing postseason list of accolades for Ferri who was just recently named the Centennial Conference nominee for the 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year and received the Stephen G. Cary '37 Award from the Haverford College Athletic Department in May which honors the senior student-athlete who made the greatest overall impact on the entire athletic program.

Ferri, a native of Yardley, Pennsylvania, graduated as the Fords' record holder in draw controls (151), free position goals (43) and shots on goal (264). She completed the impressive feat of leading Haverford in points, goals, draw controls and free position goals while earning all-conference and all-region recognition for every year of her career. A 2011 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Third-Team All-American, Ferri ranked fourth in the conference this season in free position goals per game (0.92) and third in caused turnovers per game (1.54).

This marks the third time Ferri, a psychology major, has been named to the Academic All-Area Team. She was also named to the Centennial academic honor roll for three straight seasons.

Joining Ferri on the squad were Shannon Carabba (Gwynedd-Mercy), Megan Chacosky (Immaculata), Kelli Joran (Drexel), Amanda Kirby (Gwynedd-Mercy), Michelle Lubrano (Rowan), Kelly McKay (Chestnut Hill), Taylor Peltzer (Philadelphia U), Melanie Sarcinello (La Salle), Missy Schweitzer (Temple) and Caribeth Shappell (Philadelphia U). Penn's Emily Leitner was named the performer of the year.
