SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Haverford College women's lacrosse team defeated the Swarthmore College Garnet, 17-10, at Clothier Field on Saturday afternoon. The Fords' win, along with losses by Dickinson College and McDaniel College, sent head coach Lauren Wray's team to the Centennial Conference playoffs for the first time in two seasons.
Freshman Molly Lausten got the playoff bound Fords on the board with a tally at the 27:39 mark of the first half. Swarthmore's Elyse Tierney tied the game at one, but Haverford responded with a four goal outburst to take a 5-1 advantage with 15:13 left. Lausten, sophomore Sarina Manetta, senior Dayna Kim and junior Christina Gould registered goals during that span. The Garnet added two goals, cutting the deficit to two at 5-3 with 13 minutes on the clock; however Haverford ended the first stanza with five consecutive goals, highlighted by Lausten's four tallies. The freshman finished with six goals in the first 30 minutes of game action as the Fords headed into halftime with a 10-3 lead.
Swarthmore scored the first goal of the second half, but Haverford put up six consecutive goals to go in front by a score of a 16-4 with 15:51 left in the game. The home team went on a 5-0 push to get within seven with 3:05 to go, but would not get any closer.
Lausten scored a career-best seven goals and finished with eight points. Her seven goals are tied for the sixth most in a single game in program history. Senior Diana Perry had three goals, giving her 47 for the season and 173 in her career. Perry is one goal shy of tying Josie Ferri '12 for third all-time. Junior Elyse Adler and Manetta also had multi-goal games while seven Fords tallied goals in the victory.
Sara Lentricchia and Kathryn Restrepo each had three goals for the Garnet in the loss.
Haverford finishes the regular season at 10-7 overall and 5-4 in the Centennial Conference while Swarthmore ends the year at 7-9 this year and 2-7 in the conference. The Fords qualified for the Centennial Conference playoffs for the fourth time in program history and second time under Wray. The No. 5 seeded women's lacrosse team will travel to Muhlenberg on Wednesday. The time of the game has not been announced.
