Fords roll past Smith on final day of Pioneer Valley Invite

AMHERST, Mass. - The Haverford College women's squash team completed play in the Pioneer Valley Invitational on Sunday with a 9-0 sweep of Smith College at the Davenport Squash Courts on the campus of Amherst College.

The 34th-ranked Fords (2-6) received strong efforts from the entire roster to close the weekend of challenging competition. Samara Flug, at No. 6, made quick work of Jana Chan as she gave up only six points in her 3-0 victory (11-3, 11-0, 11-3). Caroline Nightingale at No. 1, Bethany Simmonds at No. 2, Alex Love at No. 3, Randee Johnson at No. 5 and Sarah Madigan at No. 8 also claimed wins in the minimum three games against the Pioneers (0-7).

Playing at No. 4, Alisa Strayer won the first two games of her match with Vivian Lee and then dug deep to win the deciding game five after Lee had battled back to tie the contest (13-11, 11-4, 3-11, 9-11, 11-6). Hannah Miller, at No. 7, duplicated Strayer's feat as she also registered a 3-2 victory after Shika Mahajan rallied from a 2-1 deficit (11-8, 10-12, 12-10, 7-11, 11-6).

Haverford returns home for its next contests as it hosts Georgetown University at 11 a.m. and Vassar College at 3 p.m. at the Gardner Integrated Athletic Center on Saturday, Jan. 26.
