Women's squash outlasts Bucknell on Senior Day

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The 34th-ranked Haverford College women's squash team completed the regular season with a 5-4 victory over Bucknell University at the Gardner Integrated Squash Courts on Saturday afternoon.

Miriam Fuchs produced the Fords' initial point of the contest as she rallied from a 1-0 deficit to win three consecutive games (11-8, 11-7, 11-5) to take the match. The top of the ladder produced a pair of 3-0 wins from Caroline Nightingale and Bethany Simmonds at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, to aid the Haverford cause against the 31st-ranked Bison (2-7) but it was the middle of the lineup that would prove instrumental in the Fords' victory. Sarah Madigan, at No. 7, persevered after a game-one setback to win the next three including two that went to extra points. Playing at No. 6, Samara Flug battled past Caroline Cutter as Flug rolled to an 11-4 victory in the deciding fifth game.

Haverford gave the University of Virginia a fight in the first match of the day but fell 7-2 to the 29th-ranked Cavaliers (9-5). Alex Love, playing at No. 3, swept past Amara Warren as she registered an 11-4, 11-5, 11-2 victory. Fuchs, at No. 9, accounted for the Fords' other point of the day when she outlasted Grace Knox for a 3-2 victory. Alisa Strayer at No. 4 and Randee Johnson at No. 5 played well but fell in tight, five-game contests.

Saturday's tri-match marked the last home contest for seniors Fuchs, Johnson, Strayer and Hannah Miller.

The Women's College Squash Association team championships, hosted by Yale University, will take place on Feb. 15-17.
