Women's Squash Wins Twice on Senior Day

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The No. 30 ranked Haverford College Women's Squash team took a pair of victories on Senior Day at the GIAC Squash Courts, besting No. 34 Boston College, 7-2, and No. 33 Bucknell, 9-0 to wrap up regular season action. The Fords are now 7-8 on the season heading into next weekend's CSA Team Championships.

Haverford began the day with a win from Isabelle Gotuaco at the third spot on the ladder, as the senior co-captain bested Grace Tregidgo in a dominant performance, surrendering just four total points to her opponent in an 11-1, 11-2, 11-1 sweep.

Boston College tied the score at 1-1 as senior Olivia Franco was defeated by Grace Fink (11-5, 11-8, 1-9) at the sixth spot but the Fords retook the lead as sophomore Belen Madariaga swept past Keaton McAuliffe at the ninth flight (11-5, 11-9, 11-8).

Haverford went up 3-1 as first year Maddie Hager swept Sabrina Didizian at the second flight (11-8, 11-8, 11-0) and moved to the brink of clinching the match as sophomore Sophie Jackson defeated Carol Dickinson at the eighth spot (11-6, 11-8, 11-5).

First year Tia Brown clinched the match for the Fords with a comeback victory over Sara Rimmler at the fifth flight. Rimmler posted 13-11 and 12-10 victories over Brown, but the hard-fought games got the best of Rimmler. Brown was able to storm back to take three straight games, handing Haverford the overall win with 11-7, 11-5 and 11-9 victories in her matchup. 

Senior Grace Fioramonti-Gorchow extended Haverford's lead to 6-1 with an 8-11, 11-8, 11-2, 11-7 win over Paige Hanauer at the seventh flight.  Kaitlin Reese gave Haverford its seventh individual match win with a triumph in a five-game thriller over Christina McLaughlin (7-11, 12-10, 6-11, 11-7, 11-6).

Sophomore Sunyoung Chai fell to Anne Marie Green in the last regulation match to finish (7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-13, 9-11). 

Haverford won its second straight match against Boston College, improving on a 5-4 win a season ago. The two teams have met each season dating back to the 2014 season.

Haverford 9, Bucknell 0

In the late afternoon match against Bucknell, the Fords recorded a sweep of the Bison, with just three matches going past the minimum of three games.

Hager delivered the first match for the Fords with a sweep of Caroline Fakharzadeh (11-1, 11-3, 11-4) at the second flight. Franco then defeated Hannah Yeager (11-9, 11-8, 11-4) at the sixth flight for a 2-0 lead and Chai defeated Alexandra Lenard (11-4, 11-9, 11-6) at the fourth flight to put the Fords up 3-0 after the first round of matches.

Jackson swept Bel Harrington (11-6, 11-5, 11-5) at the eighth flight, putting Haverford just one win away from victory in the overall match.Brown then swept Cleo Greenwood (11-4, 11-7, 11-1) at the fifth flight to clinch the match in favor of the Fords.

Madariaga took a win over Ciara Donohue at the ninth flight, rallying with three straight wins after dropping the first game (4-11, 11-3, 12-10, 11-6).

Gotuaco swept Katherine von Weise at the second flight (11-4, 11-5, 11-2) and Reese then took a four-game win over Sophia Hartman at the top flight (11-6, 12-10, 9-11, 11-3).

Fioramonti-Gorchow defeated Homa Gharagozlu at the seventh flight, narrowly missing a sweep as an epic third game went to her opponent. Fioramonti-Gorchow rallied for a win in the fourth game to seal the 9-0 victory for Haverford (11-7, 11-8, 14-16, 11-9).

Haverford reversed two straight defeats to the Bison with the win on Saturday. Haverford and Bucknell are tied 3-3 in the all-time series, which dates back to the 2013 campaign.

Gotuaco ends the day with 35 career wins, just three victories behind the all-time career total set by Rachel Kaplan '99.  Gotuaco will look to add to her win total next week as the Fords head to the CSA Team Championships.

The Fords will be back in action at the afformentioned CSA Team Championships, which will be held next weekend (Feb. 16-18) at Harvard. More information about the CSA Team Championships, including scheduling and matchups, will be available early next week.
