No. 26 Women's Squash Celebrates Seniors, Blanks Bucknell, 9-0

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The No. 26 Haverford College women's squash team (6-6) continued its strong season on Saturday with a 9-0 blanking of No. 43 Bucknell (0-4) at the GIAC Squash Courts. Prior to the first serve with the Bison, Haverford honored its senior class of Caroline Smith, Maisie Smith, Clarice Xu, Lyvia Yan, and Emilia Zegers

When the ceremonies were completed, the Haverford squad certainly got off on the right foot, poised to send the seniors out with a final home victory. With only seven players available to visiting Bucknell, Haverford began the afternoon with a 2-0 edge by default.

Despite the early cushion, the Fords did not seem to have any intentions of needing the help as Caroline Smith showed her senior leadership as the captain grabbed a showcase win over Catie Sharp at the third flight. Playing on the GIAC courts for the final time in her career, Smith logged an 11-1, 11-1, 11-2 sweep. With the victory, Smith collected her 25th career tally, putting her 10th in Haverford program history despite missing a season due to the pandemic.

Zegers also was a straight-game winner over Gabby Lauria, as she allowed just five total points in the sweep at the fifth flight (11-3, 11-1, 11-1). Yan similarly feted her senior day with a sweep, allowing just 11 total points to Grace Sharp (11-4, 11-5, 11-2).

At the top two flights, Ariana Solecki got past Ellie Hopkins in straight games, despite Hopkins taking the second game to extra points (11-6, 12-10, 11-6). Catherine Fortin allowed just seven total points to Charlotte Brauer in an impressive showing at the second flight (11-2, 11-5, 11-0). Amelia Stevens turned in a sweep of Josie Duggan at the fourth flight (11-4, 11-2, 11-5).  Aman Hamdard took down Ellla Brennan in a methodical sweep at the seventh flight, allowing just two total points to her opponent (11-1, 11-1, 11-0).

Saturday represented Haverford's eighth consecutive victory over Bucknell, as the program now moves to 10-3 all-time against the Bison. This was Haverford's second 9-0 sweep of Bucknell since 2018 and the third 9-0 sweep of the season.

Haverford will now head out on the road for the final regular season trip on Saturday, February 11. The Fords will face off with Centennial Conference Round Robin host No. 19 Franklin & Marshall (10:30 a.m.) before a showdown against No. 24 Dickinson at 1:30 p.m. to wrap up the weekend. The stint in Lancaster is the final tuneup for the CSA Team Championships, which will be held in Philadelphia from February 17-19, 2023.
