Balmer sets new program mark in mile at Columbia Final Qualifier Meet

NEW YORK - Katie Balmer and Fiona Hendry represented the Haverford College women's indoor track & field team in impressive fashion at the Columbia University Final Qualifier Meet hosted by The Armory on Saturday night.

Balmer and Hendry were the top Division III finishers in the mile as they placed 16th and 17th, respectively.

Establishing a new program standard, Balmer (pictured) finished in 4 minutes, 56.82 seconds to improve upon her previous career-best showing of 5:01.50 from this season's Centennial Conference championships. The sophomore's performance takes the top spot in program history from Annick Lamar '08 who ran the indoor mile in 4:57.84 in March of her senior year. Converted from The Armory's banked track to the NCAA-standard flat track, Balmer's time of 4:59.76 ranks fourth among Centennial Conference performances this season and currently stands 19th in all of D-III. Balmer now lays claim to two Haverford records as she set the program mark (2:15.67) in the 800 meter run last March.

Also rising to the occasion with a career-best time was Hendry who finished in 5:03.17. Hendry's effort ranks fourth all-time in program history.
