Weathers Places 11th in Mile Trials of NCAA Indoor Championship

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Nora Weathers ran to an 11th place finish in the one mile trials at the NCAA Division III National Indoor Track & Field Championships. Her finish just missed a spot in Saturday's final as the top three from each heat, plus an additional four runners made the event final.

Weathers finished in a time of 5:07.44. Her section featured eight on the top 11 runners in the event. However, she was edged out by Jordan Nielson of Wheaton (Ill.) for the final spot. Weathers was 3.26 seconds off the pace of the last finals qualifier.

Running in a finals only race, Kelley Riffenburgh's first appearance at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship finished in bizarre fashion. Technically, the result is still pending hours after the completion of her event. Counting down to the final laps of the 5,000 meters, the meet officials lost track of the number of laps remaining. With the mass confusion of runners at the finish line trying to sort out the race details, an official decision of the final results is tentatively scheduled to be announced at 12 p.m. noon Saturday afternoon.

The matter of deciding Riffenburgh's ultimate place in the national championship aside, women's indoor track & field has wrapped up competition for the weekend. On the men's side, Charlie Marquardt will run in the 3,000 meters on Saturday.

Moving to the outdoor season, Riffenburgh and Weathers will lead their teammates into the spring season. The first outdoor meet of the track & field season is scheduled for this coming Friday, March 21 when the team travels to Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania for the Philadelphia College Classic.
