Weathers Wins for Women's Track & Field at Kutztown Invitational

KUTZTOWN, Pa .- A first-place run from Nora Weathers in the 3,000 meters highlighted multiple top 10 finishes for the Haverford College women's indoor track and field season as the Fords got their spring semester started at Kutztown's Golden Bear Invitational on Saturday.

Running in the quicker heat, Weathers set the pace on her way to leading Haverford to place four finishers in the top 10. Weathers crossed the line first in a time of 10:36.84. Amelia Keyser-Gibson finished in a time of 10:51.84 to place fourth. Sophie Drew (11:23.2) and MaryKate Cavanaugh (11:26.0) were ninth and 10th, while Molly Allen crossed the finish line in a time of 11:37.2 for a 13th place showing.

The Fords also entered five individuals in the one mile run. That race was also highlighted by a senior as Maggie Heffernan placed third overall with a time of 5:35.6. Sarah Wade recorded a top five finish with a mark of 5:38.1. Running in the second heat, Alison Love was 17th for the event with a time of 6:01.67. Liana Alves (6:11.85) and Marie Vastola (6:13.65) were the top two finishers in the third heat, placing right behind Love in the overall event standings.

Haverford also had two runner-up finishes during the evening. Competing in the 1,000 meters, Katie Sullivan finished with a hand-timed 3:05.2, placing her second in school history behind Darian Lunne '09 for the event. She was edged out by Elizabethtown's Kelsey Brady by two-tenths of a second for the top spot. In the shot put, Claire Sargent just missed a personal best with a throw of 12.31 meters. That toss was only bested by Kutztown's Macey Tanseco and her shot put of 13.37 meters.

Other top five performances from the team came in the 55 meter dash, triple jump and 4x400 relay. Elizabeth Reikowski placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 10.43 meters. Brittany Steele made the finals in the 55 meter dash and was fourth in the finals with a time of 7.53 to tie Aislinn Sowash '07 for third in the school's record book. In the 4x400 relay, the team of Sullivan, Mairead Ferry, Amy Zamora, and Yue Xiang finished in a time of 4:23.54 to place fifth overall.

Women's indoor track & field will return to action next Saturday, January 23 as the Fords take part in the Ursinus Invitational. Ursinus will also serve as the host site for the Centennial Conference Indoor Championship at the end of February.
