Volleyball remains unbeaten with two more wins on Saturday

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The 24th-ranked Haverford College volleyball team picked up two more wins on Saturday to close out the 24th Annual Haverford College Volleyball Invitational. The Fords defeated Stevens Institute of Technology, 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 16-25, 25-14), and Susquehanna University, 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 26-24), at Gooding Arena.

Against Stevens the defense came up with 69 digs and held the Ducks to a .159 attack percentage. Rebecca Salvo led the effort with 25 digs while Kelsey Cantwell and Franny Glick chipped in with 12 and 11, respectively.

Rachel Salvo led the team with 17 kills and an astounding .457 attack percentage. Cantwell notched a double-double with 14 kills to go along with her 12 digs. Rebecca Salvo followed suit with 10 kills (and 25 digs).

In the nightcap, Haverford (5-0) used some timely hitting to put away Susquehanna in three sets. The Fords hit .272 for the match, but saw it rise to .355 in the second set and put away 19 kills in the third. Both Salvo's led the way with double-doubles. Rebecca had 12 kills and 10 digs while Rachel had 12 and 16.

Glick and Caitlyn Tranquillo recorded 11 digs apiece for the defense. Kate Comey dished out 37 assists against Susquehanna and had 83 total on the day.

At the conclusion of the day the all-tournament team was announced as voted on by the coaches. Rachel Salvo was named MVP for the second consecutive year. Comey and Rebecca Salvo made all-tournament for the second straight year as well. Here is the rest of the team: Brooke Winterling (Frostburg State), Sarah Byrne (Stevens), Maggie Kowalska (Stevens) and Meghan Spence (Widener).

The Fords will be in action again next weekend in the Muhlenberg Buttermaker Tournament. On Friday HC faces Moravian College at 4 p.m. and DeSales University at 7 p.m.
