Fords go 3-0 at NYU Violet Classic

NEW YORK - The Haverford College volleyball team continued its stellar start to the season by rolling past Frostburg State University and Wesleyan College by identical 3-0 scores Saturday afternoon on the final day of the NYU Violet Classic.

Facing the Bobcats (1-15) for the second time this season, the Fords (10-2) came out strong from the onset of the match with a .348 attack percentage and just one attack error in set one on their way to a 25-11 victory. Haverford then shook off an early deficit to edge Frostburg State, 25-22, in set two. Taking advantage of the opportunity to close out the match in set three, the Fords pushed out to a 20-10 advantage on their way to a 26-16 victory.

Freshmen Nina Mutty and Meg O'Day led a balanced offensive attack with eight kills each. Classmate Olivia Walsh put forth another consistent effort with 31 assists. Haverford, with nine aces overall, was effective in the service game as Keri Godbe and Madison Fuelling contributed three apiece.

The Fords' defense limited the Bobcats to a scant .051 attack percentage throughout the match. Fuelling took team-high honors with 12 digs while Godbe and Walsh each tallied eight. O'Day registered two block assists and two solo blocks while Olivia Coburn-Flynn chipped in with three block assists of her own.

Aimee Petrides led Frostburg State with seven kills while Maddie White was active on defense with 13 digs.

Haverford did not cool off in the second contest of the day as it swept the Cardinals (3-6) with scores of 25-16, 25-20, 25-18.  Registering a .344 attack percentage in set one (14 kills, three errors), the Fords opened a 16-6 lead with strong play from O'Day and Mutty en route to claiming victory. Trailing 11-6 in set two, Haverford tallied six of the next seven points to tie the score at 12-12 and remained in control throughout the remainder of the set. Finally, in set three, the Fords rushed out to a 17-7 advantage before closing out the match.

O'Day and Mutty each reached double-digits in kills with 13 and 10, respectively. Walsh registered 28 assists.

Leading the Haverford defense, Fuelling took game-high honors with 19 digs while Mutty added 17. Coburn-Flynn was a strong presence at the net with four block assists.

Kim Farris spearheaded the Wesleyan attack with seven kills as the Cardinals were held to a slim .069 attack percentage.

Recognized for their strong play throughout the weekend, Mutty and O'Day earned inclusion to the all-tournament team.

Haverford, one of just two schools to go undefeated this weekend at NYU, faces another non-conference contest Wednesday night when it travels to Hoboken, N.J. for a 7:30 p.m. contest against Stevens Institute of Technology.
