Benoit Scores 500th Career Victory as Fords Earn Split at Stockton

GALLOWAY, N.J. – The Haverford College volleyball team earned a split in its Stockton tri-match on Saturday afternoon. After falling to the host Richard Stockton Ospreys 3-1, the Fords won the final three sets against the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons to pick up their fourth win of the season.

Head coach Michele Benoit scored her 500th career win in the victory over SUNY Cortland. Benoit, in her fourth season with the Fords, has a career .722 winning percentage in her 20 seasons as a head coach and has won at least 20 matches in each of the past two seasons.

Haverford won the first set 25-18 against the Ospreys behind a .333 attack percentage. The team had 14 kills in the set and a match-low four errors. Stockton came back to win the next three sets 25-23, 25-19 and 31-29. Juniors Keri Godbe (team-high 19 kills and 23 digs) and Nina Mutty (10 kills and 14 digs) had a double-double for the Fords. Freshman Zoe Wong had 24 assists while junior Jeanna Kenney had 16 assists in the loss. Lindsay Schuele led the Ospreys with 13 kills while Macy Schwartz had 12 kills in the victory.  

The Red Dragons jumped out to a 1-0 advantage (25-16) over the Fords after a .400 attack percentage.  Haverford closed the gap in the second set, but fell 25-22. In set three, the Fords had a match-high 17 kills and came out with a 25-22 victory to extend the match.  Haverford managed to take set four 25-17 and completed the comeback with a 15-8 win in set five. In the final three sets, SUNY Cortland had 15 errors and an attack percentage of .052.

Godbe finished with 20 kills and only three errors (.362 attack percentage) in the five-set comeback to lead the team. Junior Meg O'Day reached double figures in kills (14) for the 16th straight match and had a .357 attack percentage.

Mutty had a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs while Kenney contributed 13 digs in the Fords' win. Kayla Pollock had 15 kills, a .353 attack percentage and seven kills in the loss for the Red Dragons.

The Fords get back in action at the Neumann Knight Invitational (Sept. 12-13) next weekend. They take on Marymount (Va.) and Moravian on Friday and Scranton and the host Neumann on Saturday.
