Volleyball's Season Ends In Regional Semifinal

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Haverford College volleyball team saw its season come to an end with a 3-0 loss to the No. 13 Eastern University Eagles in the Newport News Regional semifinal on Saturday afternoon at the Freeman Center.

The Eagles got the scoring started in the first set with six of the first eight points. Haverford cut the deficit to two at 10-8, but Eastern's 8-0 run gave it a 18-9 lead. The Eagles saw their lead shrink to four at 24-20, but a service error gave them a 25-20 set one win.

The second set featured 14 lead changes and 13 ties. Eastern jumped in front at 18-16 and held off Haverford despite the Fords getting within one point on four separate occasions. The Eagles ended the set with four straight points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Eastern went on a 15-4 run to end the third set (25-14) and advanced to the regional final on Sunday afternoon.

Junior Meg O'Day led the Fords with 14 kills. Her season ends as one of the best single seasons in the program's history. She set the program record in total blocks (123) while her attack percentage (.348) is third best and her kills ranks second.

Sophomore Kaylynn Mayo had a career-high eight kills while junior Keri Godbe had eight kills and nine digs in the loss. Godbe's 414 kills this year marks only the 10th time in Fords' history in which a player has had 400 kills in a season. Katrina Pisch led the Eagles with 11 kills in the win.

The Fords end the season at 22-10 while the Eagles improve to 31-5. It's the most wins for the team since the 2009 season and it's also the third straight 20-win season under head coach Michele Benoit. The loss also marks the end of the careers for seniors Sarah Brody and Madison Fuelling. The two seniors were apart of three Centennial Conference playoff berths. Brody (1,188) and Fuelling (1,175) also rank 12th and 14th in program history in digs.
