NEW YORK – The Haverford College volleyball team split a tri-match at Baruch University with a 3-2 loss to the New York University (NYU) Violets (10-25, 24-26, 25-14, 25-20 and 15-8) and a 3-0 sweep over the Baruch Bearcats (25-10, 25-22, 25-16) at the Arc Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Haverford's first match of the day got off to a great start with an easy set one win over NYU, 25-10. The Fords used an 11-1 run to take a 13-3 lead and never looked back. Senior Keri Godbe led the team with four kills while senior Meg O'Day added three kills and three service aces in the set.

The Fords held the biggest lead of the second set at 13-9, before the Violets eventually stormed back to tie it at 16-all. The two teams exchanged rallies before NYU scored four of five to take a 24-21 advantage. The Fords had veracious comeback as a kill by Godbe and O'Day cut their deficit to one, leading to a Violets' timeout. The stoppage did nothing to break momentum as an attack error and two kills by the seniors completed the set victory.

NYU did not go quietly as it took the third set, 25-15. The Violets went on a 9-1 spurt to take a 12-4 lead early in the set, not allowing the Fords to get closer than five points the rest of the way. The two teams played an even set four with no team leading by more than three until NYU was up 23-19. The Violets scored seven of the final nine points in the set to tie that match at two.

The Violets jumped ahead in the fifth set, 8-4, after tallying five of six points. Haverford cut the score in half, but NYU recorded four straight points to set the score at 12-6. The Fords couldn't muster one more run, falling in set five, 15-8, and dropping the match in five.

O'Day finished with 19 kills and a .314 attack percentage to lead the Fords. Godbe had a double-double with 18 kills and 14 digs. Senior Olivia Walsh quarterbacked the offense with 27 assists while sophomore Zoe Wong added 17 assists in the loss.

After a break in action, the Fords took on host Baruch in the final match of the afternoon. Earlier in the day, NYU won over Baruch in three sets. A close first set quickly turned into a rout for Haverford as it ballooned its lead to 21-9 after a 14-4 run. The Fords won the first set, 25-10.

Up 7-3 in the second set, the Fords expanded their lead to 19-11, leading to a Bearcats timeout. The home team crept closer, going on an 11-5 sprint, setting the score at 24-22, but an O'Day kill gave Haverford the set win. The Fords led throughout the entire third set, but the Bearcats scored three straight to get within one at 16-15. Haverford put the contest away with seven consecutive points and eventually took the set, 25-16, to sweep the match.

Godbe set a career high with a .562 attack percentage. The senior had 18 kills and no errors in 32 attempts while also adding in 15 digs. O'Day had 11 kills while Walsh had 21 assists in the win.

Head coach Michele Benoit's team is now 9-5 on the season while NYU improved to 9-7 and Baruch fell to 6-12. The Fords will welcome Johns Hopkins to the Gooding '84 Arena on Wednesday night for a Centennial Conference battle that is scheduled for 7 p.m.
