Volleyball Bests Lancaster Bible In Three Sets

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College volleyball team took down Lancaster Bible in a three-set sweep on Wednesday night, completing its third sweep in a row with set scores of 25-19, 25-10, and 25-16 at Gooding '84 Arena. Haverford was paced by Kaylynn Mayo who tallied seven kills and four blocks, and Maddie Becker who recorded 10 kills and 12 digs for her third double-double effort of the 2016 campaign. Haverford now sits at 5-2 on the season while Lancaster Bible falls to 1-5.

Haverford began the match in a back-and-forth battle with the Chargers of Lancaster Bible as a Becker attack error allowed the visitors to tie the match at 10-10.  The Fords were able to stretch the advantage to 17-12, a 7-2 run punctuated by a Sara Matsumura service ace. Lancaster Bible fought back to cut the lead to 18-17, but a handling error by setter Allison Shuey allowed Hailey O'Mara to take over at the service line. O'Mara oversaw back-to-back kills from Mayo and Becker before a Mayo solo block gave Haverford a 22-17 lead. Errors from Becker and Mayo cut the lead to 22-19 before O'Mara delivered a kill of her own. After Mayo stepped to the service line, Abby Keller delivered a kill on a setter dump and Julia Gallagher-Teske punched one down for the 25-19 set one win.

The second set was characterized by an early 10-4 run by the Fords, as three straight attack errors by the visitors forced a Charger timeout. Matsumura erred on a serve attempt but a blocking error by Shuey enabled the Fords to rattle off kills from Mayo and O'Mara for a 13-5 lead. Myranda Kemrer delivered a kill that started a 3-0 run for the Chargers, cutting the lead to 17-10, but the advantage would get no slimmer as the Fords finished on a 8-0 run. Becker was a key contributor, delivering three kills in the sequence. An Emily Olson service error ended the set in the favor of Haverford.

The Fords again started strong in the third set with an 11-5 run capped with a Pisch service ace. The Chargers battled back to cut the lead to 13-10 and a dump from the setter Shuey saw Lancaster Bible trail just 15-12.  Haverford jumped out to a 9-4 run to lead 22-14, with Becker swinging for the kill that induced a Lancaster Bible timeout. The Chargers were outpaced after the final break in the action, with Gallagher-Teske finishing the match with a block at 25-16.

The Fords hit .257 on the night to -.022 for the visitors. Haverford hit .324 in the third and final set and Pisch was an impressive .533 on her swings for the night while adding 12 digs. Abby Keller had 34 assists while Mayo, Gallagher-Teske and Pisch combined for nine blocks.  Lancaster Bible was paced by Alyssa Bowen who delivered five kills on 22 swings. Myranda Kemrer had 12 assists.

Haverford now heads to Carlisle, Pa. and the campus of Dickinson College for a tri-match that serves as the conference opener. The Fords will take on the host Red Devils at 11:00 a.m. before a matchup with N.C. Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m.
