Volleyball Falls To No. 10 Eastern and No. 22 Mary Washington At Osprey Classic

GALLOWAY, N.J. – The Haverford College volleyball team was defeated by a pair of ranked opponents at the Osprey Classic on Saturday on the Stockton University campus. Haverford took a set off of the No. 10 Eastern Eagles in a 3-1 loss before falling to the No. 22 Mary Washington Eagles, 3-0, in straight sets. Set scores for the Eastern match were 24-26, 25-22, 16-25 and 13-25. In the Mary Washington match, Haverford fell 22-25, 21-25, 22-25. Haverford sits at 6-6 on the season after dropping a pair of matches. Eastern is now 14-0 while Mary Washington sits at 13-1 on the season.

In the Eastern matchup, Haverford was paced by Maddie Becker, who recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs, her sixth double-double of the season. Elena Garcia had nine kills on only 20 swings while Natalie Pisch added eight on 35. The Fords had their best hitting performance of the day in the second set victory, hitting .297. Zoe Wong tallied 31 assists in the match while Kaylynn Mayo had two solo blocks and three blocks assists to pace the way for Haverford. Libero Sara Matsumura tallied 22 digs.

For Eastern, Stephanie Elechko had 15 kills on 55 swings while Alicia Weigel had 14 on 43 swings. Morgan Kline tallied 43 assists and Rylie Haas had 29 digs. Eastern improved its record to 14-0 on the season in victory.

Against Mary Washington, Haverford took an early 9-6 lead in the first set and traded points with the Eagles in the early going, ceding the lead at 15-15 after an attack error by Mayo. From there, Mary Washington stretched the lead to 21-17, leading to a Fords timeout to stop the run. Haverford cut the advantage to just two at 21-23 after a Garcia kill and an attack error from Rachel Hendricks. Becker then committed an error that led to a Fords timeout down by three at 24-21. Natalie Pisch took an assist from Wong and converted to cut the lead to 24-22 but Peyton Dunow closed out the first set with a kill.

The second set was also closely contested as Haverford came out to a 15-11 lead, a run capped by a Becker kill. The Eagles then went on a run of their own to take a 17-15 lead as Savannah Powers was the server for four straight Mary Washington points. The Fords cut it to 18-17 but the Eagles went on another run with Ryan Cho serving to go ahead 21-17, leading to another Haverford timeout. The Fords forced a Mary Washington timeout with a Natalie Pisch service ace, but from that point Mary Washington was able to secure the final two tallies to take set two 25-21.

Mary Washington started the third set on a 7-1 run, with Haverford rallying back, trailing by just a point at 11-10 after a Becker kill. Mary Washington regained momentum with a solid stretch to go up 22-17 before the Fords responded with four straight points to pull within one at 22-21. Mary Washington came back with three of the next four to take the match in three sets, pulling to within the brink of a win with a block from Skyler Sisk and Rachel Hendricks. Becker made it 24-22 with a kill but Sisk responded with the final kill to take the match in straight sets.

Haverford hit .111 in the match. Becker tallied nine kills and had 16 digs. Wong posted 23 assists while Julia-Gallagher Teske was the top blocker in the match, with a block solo and three block assists. Garcia, Mayo and Pisch also accumulated blocks in the match. Savannah Powers had 16 kills to lead Mary Washington while Emma Olson had 32 assists and 17 digs in an all-around effort.

Haverford will be back in Galloway, N.J. on Sunday morning to wrap up the Osprey Classic with a 10:00 a.m. showdown against the host Ospreys.
