Volleyball Sweeps Montclair State, Falls To Springfield At Day One Of Stevens Invitational

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Haverford College volleyball team split the first day of the Stevens Invitational, blasting past an 18-win Montclair State team before falling in four sets to Springfield, a team receiving votes in the latest AVCA Poll.  Haverford sits at 11-10 on the season after the non-conference day of action in the Garden State.  Set scores for the first game of the day were 25-21, 25-22, 25-22 while the second contest saw the Fords take the first set at 25-23 before falling 23-25, 13-25 and 16-25.

In game one against Montclair State, the Fords started in a hole, going down 5-0 before calling timeout to end the run. Haverford battled back and tied the score at 12-12 as Natalie Pisch delivered a kill.  The Fords induced a Montclair St. timeout at 14-12 with an Elena Garcia service ace leading to the stoppage.
 
The Redhawks kept it close, with Haverford regaining a two-point advantage at 20-18 as Zoe Wong picked up a kill from the setter position.  Montclair State tied the contest at 20-20 with a Courtney Matlock kill, but a Julia Gallagher-Teske block put Haverford ahead for good, as a Gallagher-Teske kill gave the Fords a 25-21 win in the first set.
 
The second set saw Haverford and Montclair State locked in a close scrum, with neither side taking a three-point lead until the Fords went up 21-18 after a Valentine Courouble kill. Haverford would win by the three-point margin at 25-22 as Gallagher-Teske again contributed a block, one of her seven in the contest, to put the Fords on the brink of a win.  The block total represents the fourth-best effort in three sets in Haverford program history.
 
In the third set, Haveford trailed at 14-10, leading to a timeout.  The Fords cut the lead to just one at 20-19 with Courouble contributing one of her 16 kills on the match.  After a Montclair State timeout, Haverford  was able to tie the score at 21-21 with a kill from Pisch. Pisch contributed the final four kills for Haverford, finishing with 12 on the match as Haverford took the third set 25-22 after hitting a match-best .214 on the set.
 
Zoe Wong finished with 34 assists and seven kills on just ten swings to lead the way for Haverford. Courouble (16) and Pisch (12) each had double-digit kill totals while Maddie Becker posted 18 digs.
 
Springfield 3, Haverford 1

 In the second match of the day, Haverford was bested by Springfield. The Fords took the first set with a 4-0 run after trailing 19-17, leading to a Springfield timeout. Valentine Courouble, who finished with 22 kills, gave Haverford a lead at 23-21, and the Fords finished it off with a Zoe Wong kill for a 25-23 win.

The second set saw a tie as late as 23-23, but after a Springfield timeout, the Pride took the final two points with Lauren Holt and Kayleigh Helgesen providing the final two points with kills to tie the match at 1-1.
 
Springfield pulled away with a 25-13 win in the third set after the Fords held a 10-7 lead and prevailed 25-16 in the fourth and final set sprinting out to a 16-8 lead before Haverford cut the lead to 15-19 with a Courouble kill.  Back-to-back errors from Haverford gave Springfield a 22-15 lead before a Fords timeout. The Pride finished the match with kills from Holt and Jennifer Donnelly to win 25-16.
 
Courouble finished with 22 kills on 49 swings, her season-best total on the season. Pisch posted 13 kills while Wong had 41 assists. Sara Matsumura had 16 digs to lead the effort for Haverford.
 
The Fords wrap up the Stevens-hosted tournament on Saturday, with games against FDU-Florham and the host Ducks.  The action will start at 1:00 p.m. and the weekend slate will wrap up at 3:00 p.m.
