Volleyball Downs Bryn Mawr in Straight Sets

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Haverford College volleyball team swept past host Bryn Mawr on Wednesday evening at the Class of 1958 Gymnasium on the Bryn Mawr campus. Set scores were 25-10, 25-12 and 25-13. The Fords were paced by a game-best 11 kills from Sara Matsumura while Natalie Pisch added 10 kills. Julia Gallagher-Teske recorded nine kills and added two solo blocks in the Centennial Conference matchup.

Zoe Wong posted 29 assists to pull to within 18 of 3,000 for her career entering her final collegiate regular season contest.  The total is fourth in program history. Haverford kept its playoff hopes alive, running its overall record to 16-12 (5-4 CC). Bryn Mawr falls to 1-21 overall and 0-9 in Centennial Conference play.

In a set in which the Fords hit .314, Haverford sprinted out to a 11-4 start. A Sydney Miller service ace gave the Fords a commanding 20-7 advantage and a block from Natalie Pisch and Claire Nicholas finished off the first set at 25-10.

The second set also saw the Fords off to an 11-4 start, prompting a timeout from the Owls following a Pisch kill. A 3-0 run for Bryn Mawr cut the lead to 13-7, but the Fords went ahead 20-9, cruising to a 25-12 victory despite hitting just .167 in the stanza.

In the third set, Haverford exploded offensively, hitting .429 while limiting Bryn Mawr on the defensive end to a .150 attacking mark.  The squads were locked in a battle with the Owls trailing by just one at 9-8 following an attack error. The Fords turned the 9-8 lead into a 20-10 advantage, going ahead 24-11 before Bryn Mawr used an Eliza Todd kill and an attack error two grab two points back. Claire Nicholas finished the sweep with a kill and a 25-13 set victory.

Miller scored five service aces, Wong had three while Matsumura, Nicholas and Allison Hall all added a pair from the service line. Christine Anderson added six digs. Todd and Sienna Burnett each had five kills for Bryn Mawr.  Nolan Julien had 11 assists and eight digs for the Owls.

The Fords will now return to action on Saturday, October 28 at 1 p.m. in the Senior Day contest against Hood Trophy rival Swarthmore inside the Gooding '84 Arena. Prior to the matchup, Haverford will honor its lone senior in the class of 2017, Zoe Wong.
