Natalie Pisch Records 1,000th Kill as Volleyball Splits at Stevens Invitational

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Haverford College volleyball team wrapped up the Stevens Invitational with a split on Saturday afternoon, falling to Stockton, 3-1, before turning away Scranton by a 3-1 score in the second match. Senior co-captain Natalie Pisch became the 10th player in program history to reach 1,000 kills in the second set against Stockton. In the late afternoon match with Scranton, Haverford tallied 20 blocks, with junior Julia Gallagher-Teske amassing 10 total blocks, tying for the second-most in program single-match history.

Stockton 3, Haverford 1 (17-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-11)

In the first match of the day, the Fords came out strong against the Ospreys, opening up a 17-8 advantage behind strong hitting and crisp passing. A 4-0 Stockton run made things competitive, but a block from Madison Adore and Julia Gallagher-Teske served as a prelude to a Dina Kosyagin kill that gave Haverford a commanding 20-12 lead. Adore delivered a kill that put the set away in favor of Haverford at 25-17.

The second set began in a similar manner for the Fords, as Haverford jetted out to a 12-6 advantage, seemingly overpowering Stockton. The lead would grow to 19-12, but Stockton cut the advantage to four at 19-15. Pisch netted her milestone kill to bring Haverford back to 20-15, setting up a celebration on the Haverford bench. Pisch joins nine other players in program history to reach 1,000 kills, including former teammates Keri Godbe and Meg O'Day. The next milestone for Pisch will be ninth-place all-time in program history, as Kristyn Linger '00 holds that mark with 1,017 career kills.

Unfortunately for the Fords, the Ospreys would have an answer to the strong Haverford start, storming past the Fords with a 6-0 run to close out the second set at 25-23. The Ospreys got out to an impressive start in the third, taking a 10-3 lead that ballooned to 16-6. A 7-0 run put Haverford right back into contention, with Kendall Robison excelling from the service line to pull the Fords closer. A service ace from Riley Outen made it just a one point set at 18-17, but a 5-1 Stockton run put the set away for the Ospreys, who found themselves on the brink up two sets to one. The fourth set proved to be a challenge for Haverford as Stockton held on to its momentum, opening up with a commanding 20-9 run and taking a 25-11 victory to clinch the match in four sets.

Kosyagin had nine kills in the match, while Julia Gallagher-Teske added seven and Pisch notched five. Outen delivered four service aces and Sara Hunsberger contributed 28 assists. Sara Matsumura tallied 15 digs to pace Haverford.

Haverford 3, Scranton 1 (25-17, 25-23, 25-27, 25-20)

The Fords avenged a September loss to Scranton at the Neumann Knights Invitational with an impressive performance in the final game of the day. In the first set, Haverford opened up a 21-12 lead and cruised to a 25-17 victory.

The Fords put their foot on the gas in the second set, turning an early 10-10 tie into a 16-12 lead before the Royals rallied to tie the score at 18-18. A Pisch kill put Haverford up 21-19, and a block from Adore and Gallagher-Teske gave Haverford set point at 24-21. Kosyagin found the floor with a kill for a 25-22 set victory, giving Haverford a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third was a back-and-forth affair as Scranton got out to an early lead before Haverford took a 20-18 lead behind an Elena Filograna service ace. The two sides could not find much separation in the latter stages of the set, with Scranton eventually staving off elimination in extra points, 27-25.

The fourth set was close yet again, with a block from Pisch and Outen helping Haverford to a 21-16 lead. Scranton rallied back to within get within three at 21-18, but the Fords closed out the match on a 3-0 run, as Outen, Kosyagin, and Gallagher-Teske each contributed kills to finish off the stanza at 25-20.

The blocking effort for the Fords was the highlight of the match, with Gallagher-Teske adding 10 blocks while Hunsberger contributed four and Pisch recorded three as the Fords effectively cut off every attacking angle for the Royals. Kosyagin had 13 kills to pace the Haverford offense, and Pisch notched 11 to pull to 1,013 for her career. Hunsberger added a double-double with 29 assists and 16 digs. Robison was a standout at the service line, contributing four aces.

Haverford returns to Centennial Conference action on Wednesday, October 17, traveling to McDaniel for a 6 p.m. first serve. The Fords then return home for Senior Day, honoring Pisch before hosting Dickinson and Manhattanville beginning at noon on Saturday, October 20.
