Michael Pyo (men's fencing), Sophie Gardiner (women’s fencing), and Noah Tunis (men's squash) all earned the honor for the Fords for the 2023-24 season.
The recipients of these awards are determined by an evaluation of their regular season performance and postseason performance, including both NCAA Regionals and NCAA Championships.
Two Haverford men's foil fencers, Michael Pyo and Andrew Strayer, were named to the All-Region Team by distinction of being the thid and fourth highest-finishing Division III foilists on the day.
Haverford will be pitted against fencers from Princeton, Penn State, Johns Hopkins, Penn, Duke, North Carolina, Fairleigh Dickinson (DI campus), Drew, Stevens, Temple (women), NJIT, Haverford, Wagner, and Lafayette.
The Fords achieved their best result in several years, triumphing over the host Brewers with a close score of 14-13. Additionally, they secured victories against Denison, Wagner, and MACFA rivals Hunter, Cornell, and Drew.
The Fords had their first Temple finalist in five years, as first-year phenomenon Eric Chen put on an acrobatic, athletic, and impressive performance in the Epee, placing fifth.
The Men’s squad will be challenged in nine regular season fencing competitions this season, while the Women’s Fencing team will be squaring off in eight regular season fencing bouts.
In preparation for the biennial induction ceremony, the athletic department is seeking nominations of former Haverford student-athletes and coaches for induction.
Daniel Carvalho (men’s fencing), Megan Hefflinger (women’s fencing), Quinton Crawford and Noah Tunis (men’s squash) and Caroline and Maisie Smith (women’s squash) all earned the honor for the Fords in the 2022-23 season.
Haverford qualified 11 fencers to the tournament, four from the women’s team and seven from the men; not all qualifiers were able to compete, as the field was capped at 36 competitors for each weapon.
Led by the stellar performances of sabrists Nick Conroy and Lucas Winkler, who each won 11 of 12 bouts during the team event, the sabre squad placed second.
