D3baseball.com names Bergjans All-American

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Sophomore pitcher Tommy Bergjans of Haverford College's baseball team added another postseason honor Wednesday morning when he was named to the second-team D3baseball.com All-American squad.

Already this postseason the right-hander has been named the Centennial Conference's pitcher of the year as well as a first-team all-conference player, and on Monday D3baseball.com tabbed Bergjans for first team all-Mid-Atlantic region honors. The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) selected him for second-team all-Mid-Atlantic region honors on Tuesday.

Bergjans led the Haverford staff with a 7-1 mark in nine starts and his earned run average of 1.81 was second-lowest in the Centennial.

With 89 strikeouts this spring Bergjans led the conference, was 11th in D-III, and set a single-season program record for Haverford. His mark of 12.39 strikeouts per nine innings was fourth-highest in D-III.

Opponents posted just a .180 batting average against Bergjans who surrendered only seven extra-base hits in his 64 and two-thirds innings on the mound. His average of 5.71 hits allowed per nine innings ranked 14th amongst D-III pitchers and his walks+hits per nine innings (WHIP) figure of .84 was sixth.

Bergjans threw only 7.1 innings fewer than his freshman season but surrendered 32 fewer hits. He set the single-game strikeout mark last season with 15 in a win against Muhlenberg College but broke his own record this spring with 18 in a complete-game victory against Washington College.

Tuesday's all-America nod for a Haverford player is the fourth in program history and second within the past three seasons.
