Ranked Bears down Fords

HAVERFORD, Pa. – A well-fought opening half kept the score close at halftime but the Haverford College field hockey team was eventually overpowered by fourth-ranked Ursinus, 8-1, in a Centennial Conference match-up Tuesday afternoon at Swan Field.

Down only 3-0 at the intermission, Haverford (4-7, 2-3 CC) cut the lead to just two early in the second half when Lauren Kemph, sitting at the right post, tapped in a pass from Alex Waleko on the left in the 43rd minute.

Ursinus (10-1, 6-0 CC) pushed the lead back to three soon after, though, with a score in the 45th, then added four more unanswered goals to increase its lead to the game's final margin.

Haverford's Maggie Cronin was under fire in goal nearly from the opening minute and finished with a season-high 14 saves. She also picked up some help from her defenders, three of whom -- Ariel Herm, Molly Braun and Christie Quake -- picked up one defensive save each.

Ursinus' Erica Scott earned the win for the conference-leading Bears registering three saves. Offensively, Jen Hooven led her team with three goals.

The Fords jump back into action quickly with only one day off before their next game, a 4 p.m. non-conference tilt Thursday afternoon at Swan Field against the visiting Eagles from Eastern University.
