Field hockey gives strong effort in 3-2 loss to No. 13 Bullets

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – For the second straight season the Haverford College field hockey team gave a ranked Gettysburg College team all they could handle. Last season Haverford led early in the second half before the No. 14-ranked Bullets scored twice in the final 15 minutes to win the game. On Saturday, the Fords had an upset on their minds, but it was not meant to be in a 3-2 loss to No. 13 Gettysburg.

Haverford's (3-3, 1-1 CC) defense held a Bullets offense that averages 16.50 shots per game to just five. Gettysburg (6-2, 1-1 CC) only took three shots on goal, but all three found the cage. All the scoring was done in the first half, including three goals in consecutive minutes at one point.

Alyssa Heimbach scored the first goal in the 13th minute on double assist from Vanessa Pabon and Molly Latta. Ten minutes later Juliana Morgan-Trostle fed Mary Hobbs for her fourth goal of the season to tie the score. Less than a minute later Nicole Meredyth scored on a pass from Lexie Hearn, but the Fords countered just over a minute later when Alex Waleko scored her team-leading sixth goal on an assist from Roxanne Jaffe that tied the score again, 2-2.

After a flurry of scoring, neither team attempted a shot over the next six minutes. In the 33rd minute Heimbach scored the eventual game-winner when Latta set her up.

Haverford continued to take it to the Bullets in the second half, taking eight shots (two blocked) and four penalty corners. The Fords took three shots on goal all of which were saved by Christina Anderson, who had six in the game.

The Scarlet and Black will be back home on Wednesday evening when they host Muhlenberg College at 7 p.m.
