Field hockey earns first win working overtime

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - A scoreless battle against host Delaware Valley College finally ended in the ninth minute of overtime with Mary Hobbs' first collegiate goal, allowing the Haverford field hockey team to bring home a 1-0 victory.

Neither team seemed to have much of an advantage through the opening 35 minutes as the Fords (1-2) and Aggies (4-2) totaled just nine shots.

Haverford came out smoking after the intermission, though, building a 14-1 edge in shots while they peppered Aggie goalkeeper Hollis Hancock with 10 shots on frame. Hancock withstood the pressure, however, to keep her team in the game against the Fords relentless attack.

The Fords got an early shot off in the overtime period but it wasn't until the 79th minute of the game that Margaret Selsor got the ball onto Hobbs' stick for the game-winning shot to allow Haverford to taste victory for the first time in the 2009 season.

Maggie Cronin earned the win in between the pipes for the Fords stopping all four shots that got through onto goal. Hancock finished with 11 saves in taking the loss.

Hoping to build on the win and embark on a winning streak, the Fords will entertain the College of Notre Dame (Md.) on Thursday, September 17, at 4:30 p.m. on the familiar home turf of Swan Field.
