Fords pull off upset of No. 9 Johns Hopkins

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College field hockey team pulled off one of their biggest wins in recent program history by defeating ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins University, 3-2, in a Centennial Conference game Saturday afternoon at Swan Field.

The last time Haverford (4-4, 2-2 CC) finished on the winning side of the ledger against Hopkins (7-2, 3-1 CC) was 11 years ago to the day when they defeated the visiting Blue Jays, 4-3, October 3, 1998.

Freshman Bridget Gibbons picked up a rebound from a shot by teammate Mary Hobbs and beat the Blue Jays' goalie, Sophia Tieu, to the right side of the goal for the game-winner in the 67th minute.

Haverford opened the scoring with an as-you-draw-it-up penalty corner opportunity a little more than four minutes into the opening half. Mary Hobbs inserted to stopper Juliana Morgan-Trostle who set it up for Roxanne Jaffe's blast that rang off the board behind Hopkins' Tieu.

The highly-ranked Blue Jays upped the pressure following Jaffe's goal and began peppering Haverford keeper Maggie Cronin. Hopkins took the next five shots after falling behind with Cronin stopping four of them and the other sailing wide. The sixth and seventh shots, still unanswered by the Fords, were the charm for the Blue Jays as they finally broke through for goals at 23:58 and 24:59 to take the lead.

A quickly called timeout by Haverford head coach Colleen Fink seemed to restore order within the Fords, though, as they came out of the break and scored the tying goal, by Hobbs, on the next shot coming at the 27:56 mark.

Each team had opportunities to break the deadlock in the second half but Gibbons' goal with a little less than four minutes to play was the only mark in the second half score book, sending the Fords to the upset victory.

Cronin finished with seven saves for Haverford in the win while Tieu registered three saves in the loss.

The Fords will take to the road for their next contest with a non-conference visit to Lebanon Valley College Wednesday afternoon.
