Field hockey drops heartbreaker to Mules

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College field hockey team dropped a 2-1 Centennial Conference decision to visiting Muhlenberg College in heartbreaking fashion Tuesday night.

The Fords' first shot of the game gave Haverford (3-4, 1-2 CC) a 1-0 lead in just the seventh minute as Mary Hobbs scored her fifth of the season to get her team on the scoreboard first.

Muhlenberg (6-2, 2-0 CC) rallied late in the second half with a goal in the 59th minute to tie the score followed by the game-winner with just 53 seconds left on the game clock. Both goals came off penalty corner insertions.

The home team held the lead for more than 40 minutes after Hobbs' goal and several times nearly doubled the margin. They also fought off a 5-minute man-advantage for Muhlenberg late in the first half without allowing the Mules to register even one shot.

In the end, however, it was the visiting team from Allentown that was able to rattle the back of the cage for a come-from-behind victory.

Maggie Cronin took the loss in goal for Haverford registering four saves, three in the second half. Mulenberg's Kristen Dornenburg earned the win with four saves all coming in the second half to stonewall the Haverford offensive attack.

Next up for the Fords is a home, Centennial contest on Saturday against 9th-ranked Johns Hopkins. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at Swan Field.
