Hobbs to be honored with MacIntosh Award Thursday evening

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Sophomore Mary Hobbs, a member of the Haverford College field hockey team, is the recipient of the 2010 MacIntosh Award. Hobbs played in every game for the Fords and was a key contributor on a team that made its first appearance in the Centennial Conference postseason in 2009.

The MacIntosh Award is named for Class of 1921 graduate Archibald MacIntosh, who had the rare double-honor of serving as Haverford College football and track & field captain during his senior year. The Beta Rho Sigma alumni society has presented the Award in MacIntosh's honor to the top scholar-athlete in the first-year class at Haverford since 1964.

During her first campaign at Haverford, Hobbs led the Fords with 10 goals and eight assists for a 28 point season, sixth-highest among the Centennial Conference leaders. She registered a game-winning goal ending an overtime thriller against Delaware Valley College, and provided the game-winning tally against McDaniel with less than two minutes remaining that clinched the postseason tournament berth for the Fords.

Though she has been commended for her individual successes, Hobbs deflects recognition to her peers and mentors. "I am honored to receive the 2010 MacIntosh Award," she said, "but my teammates, coaches and professors deserve the majority of recognition. They helped me achieve far more on the field and in the classroom than I ever could have without their constant support and encouragement. It was a great freshman year and I am looking forward to continuing my academic journey at Haverford while also enjoying the progress of our field hockey program."

Hobbs' freshman campaign earned her the conference player of the week award on Sept. 21, 2009, and second-team all-conference recognition in the postseason. Having such a player step back onto the turf was a comfort for first-year head coach Jackie Cox.

"Mary Hobbs is the type of athlete a coach dreams of," said Cox. "She is an outstanding field hockey player, competitor and team player, and a success in the classroom. It has been an honor to coach Mary. Whether she is scoring goals or using her skills to push the ball down the field, she is a star."

With most of the 2010 regular season complete, Hobbs has added to her freshman success already posting 16 goals and 12 assists — most in the conference — for 44 points which is fourth-best in the conference.
