Ranked Bears end Haverford win streak in conference opener for Fords

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Maggie Cronin stood tall in goal for the Haverford College field hockey team as it dropped a 7-0 decision to fourth-ranked Ursinus College Friday afternoon in the Centennial Conference opener for both schools.

Cronin made a career-high 23 saves for Haverford (3-2, 0-1 CC) in the loss to the nationally-ranked Bears (4-1, 1-0 CC). Her previous single-game high was a 15-save effort against Ursinus in 2008.

The Bears leveled 46 shots toward the Haverford goal with 33 of them making it on frame. Besides Cronin's saves total, three teammates -- Sarah Crist, Christie Quake and Roxanne Jaffe -- each made a heroic defensive save to help hold the Bears to their season scoring average of seven tallies per game.

Haverford totaled just eight shots in the contest but five made it through to Ursinus netminder LauraLee Lightwood-Mater. However, the senior was able to keep the Fords off the scoreboard for her second straight shutout.

The loss ends a three-game win streak the Fords had put together after an opening game defeat at the hands of ninth-ranked Rowan.

Haverford will try to start a new winning streak with its next outing Monday, Sept. 20 in a 4 p.m. non-conference battle at Neumann University.
