Fords come out ahead in defensive struggle at Wesley

DOVER, Del. – The Haverford College field hockey team picked up its first win of the 2011 season Wednesday night taking a 2-1 non-conference victory over host Wesley College behind second-half goals from Christine Gall and Roxanne Jaffe.

Gall put Haverford (1-1) ahead 1-0 with a score in the 50th minute of the game taking a feed from Bryn Bissey who had just had her own shot stopped by Wesley (2-1) goalkeeper Elizabeth Groom. Jaffe converted a penalty stroke opportunity at the 63:30 mark to double the margin over the Wolverines.

Wesley finally broke through for a score in the game's final minute but it was too little, too late as Fords goalie Sydney Hyder and her defenders tamed the Wolverines attack.

Hyder finished with three saves and got some help from teammates Bridget Gibbons and Catherine Aronowitz who registered defensive saves on back to back shots around the 10-minute mark of the opening half. For the game, the Fords outshout Wesley by an 18-5 margin.

The Fords will try to stay on the winning track when they entertain the Ducks from the Stevens Institute of Technology Saturday morning at 11 a.m. on Swan Field.
