Field hockey downed by #5 Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Bridget Gibbons supplied both goals for the Haverford College field hockey team in its 5-2 loss Wednesday night to fifth-ranked Messiah College in non-conference action.

Gibbons answered a Falcons goal that came at the 58:46 mark with her first of the game only eight seconds after Messiah (5-2) had pushed its lead to 4-0 over the Fords (4-3). Her second tally of the game came late in the second half with a little less than a minute left on the game clock.

Each of Gibbons' goals, her second and third of the season, were assisted by Roxanne Jaffe. On the first, Jaffe found Gibbons to the left of the goal where she was able to slam home a shot that trimmed the lead to three. In the game's final minute, Gibbons one timed a Jaffe pass into the upper part of the goal.

A strong Messiah attack kept the Haverford defense busy all game long. Fords goalkeeper Sydney Hyder finished with 11 saves after facing 16 shots from the Falcons that made it on frame.

The Fords, 2-0 in Centennial Conference play, move back into league action with their next game, a noon-time Saturday match-up at Swan Field against visiting Gettysburg College (3-3, 1-2).
