Fords chase Bears but can't pull off upset

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Margaret Selsor's goal before the midpoint of the second half pulled the Haverford College field hockey team to within one of 10th-ranked Ursinus College but the visiting Bears were able to hold off the attacking hosts to claim a 3-1 Centennial Conference victory over the Fords Wednesday at Swan Field.

Haverford (5-4, 3-1 CC) drew a penalty corner chance in the 48th minute, and from that play Selsor was able to tip in a Mary Hobbs shot to trim the Ursinus (8-2, 5-1) lead to one at 2-1. Seven minutes later, though, Ursinus' Rachel Pandl scored an unassisted marker to stretch the margin back to two.

The Fords had several scoring chances over the final 16 minutes of action but each time Ursinus goalkeeper Jill Lukens, who finished with nine saves, was there to swat away the Haverford threat.

Haverford goalie Sydney Hyder was equal to the task registering six saves in the game including a pair of diving stops on what looked like sure Ursinus goals.

The Fords out shot the Bears, 20-18, and owned the advantage in penalty corner opportunities, 16-10, but fell short on the scoreboard to fall in conference play for the first time this season.

There isn't much time for the Fords to reflect on Wednesday's loss as they welcome Eastern University to Swan Field for a non-conference, Main Line rivalry match-up, Thursday at 5 p.m.
