Morgan-Trostle OT goal lifts Fords past #14 Captains

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Juliana Morgan-Trostle's goal in the ninth minute of overtime propelled visiting Haverford College to a 2-1 upset of 14th-ranked Christopher Newport University Sunday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action.

Morgan-Trostle, scoring her eighth of the season, slapped home a feed from Roxanne Jaffe to give Haverford (8-7) the win over the Captains (10-4) and put an end to the nationally-ranked host's five-game win streak.

The Fords took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute as Mary Hobbs converted a penalty corner opportunity to notch her 18th goal of the season. Bridget Gibbons earned the assist on the play. The lead didn't last long as Jordan Snider poked home a shot in the 32nd to pull the Captains even with Haverford at 1-1 which was eventually the score the teams settled for entering the halftime break.

Second-half action tilted the Captains' way as the host school piled up 11 shots, six of which made it on goal but Fords goalkeeper Sydney Hyder kept the score even with saves on all six of the on-frame threats.

Hyder finished with 11 saves in the win while her counterpart from Christopher Newport, Jaime Dowling, took the loss after stopping seven shots but allowing two goals.

The Fords have two league games remaining on their regular season schedule beginning with Wednesday's game at Washington College. The season finale is set for Saturday, Oct. 29 when rival Swarthmore College visits Swan Field on Senior Day.
