Panthers power past men’s basketball, 55-42, in Equinox Classic

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Friday evening the Haverford College men's basketball team shot just 40 percent from the field, but placed three players in double-figures in a victory over Kenyon College. Saturday afternoon the Fords did not fare much better shooting 38 percent, but the difference was just one player reaching double-digits as they fell to Middlebury College, 55-42, in the 2009 Equinox Classic. The two teams combined for 55 turnovers.

Neither team shot particularly well in a low-scoring first half. Haverford (1-1) connected on just six field goals and was held scoreless for over 10 minutes. Middlebury (2-0) was just 8-for-25 from the field, but a 16-5 run to close out the first half gave them a 21-13 lead which proved to be enough to hold off the Fords.

Cameron Backer scored a team-high 10 points while Sam Permutt added nine points and eight rebounds. Matt Palmer hit a pair of three-pointers and ended up with eight points. Doug Edelman grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds while chipping in offensively with six points.

Ryan Sharry had a game-high 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field for the Panthers. Ryan Wholey scored 11 points as did Jake Wolfin who connected on three treys.

The Fords held an 8-4 lead after a Permutt layup with 11:30 remaining in the first half. Haverford missed its next nine field goal attempts and as a result trailed by seven with less than two minutes to go. Palmer's jumper with 1:54 showing broke the ugly streak for HC. He buried a three before the end of the half to cut the deficit to eight points.

Haverford trailed by just eight points three minutes into the second after two free throws by Bo Friddell, but the Panthers caught fire thanks to a 10-0 run that gave them a 41-21 advantage. Wolfin scored five of Middlebury's points in that run.

The Panthers scored just five points in the final 7:30. Haverford ended the game on an 11-0 run as Edelman scored three points and Baker had six in that span.

Kenyon defeated Swarthmore College, 71-56, in first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Dave Knapke (Kenyon), Will Gates (Swarthmore), Cameron Baker (Haverford), Nolan Thompson (Middlebury) and Jamal Davis (Middlebury) were named to the all-tournament team.

The Scarlet and Black travel to Washington, D.C. Tuesday evening to take on Catholic University at 7 p.m.
