Fords outrun Greyhounds

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - A pair of late free throws helped the Haverford College men's basketball team hold on for a 61-60 non-conference victory Sunday afternoon against host Moravian College.

The Fords (2-2) led 60-57 with 26 seconds remaining after Bo Friddell converted the front-end of a two shot chance from the foul line. Following a Nelson Leon miss on Moravian's trip down the floor, Haverford's Ian Goldberg was fouled and sank the back-end of his two-shot chance to give the Fords a four point lead with 3.6 seconds left on the clock.

Leon sank a 35-foot three-pointer to beat the buzzer but it wasn't enough for the Greyhounds who remained winless at 0-5 with the loss.

Tied at 24-24 with a little more than five minutes to play in the opening half, Haverford finished the period with an 11-0 run to take a 35-24 lead into the locker rooms.

The Fords led 41-28 early in the second half but the hosts went on a 20-6 run to take the lead at 48-47 midway through the half. A Friddell three-pointer pushed Haverford back in front and into a lead that they'd not relinquish.

Haverford's Sam Permutt finished with a career-best 22 points and added 10 rebounds, both game-highs, while Friddell had a career-high 20 points in the winning effort. Eric Weaver led Moravian with 16 points.

In their last outing the Fords were a chilly 25 percent from the field but against Moravian the basket seemed a little bigger as they heated up for a lofty 54 percent.

Haverford opens league play in their next game when they'll host Washington College in a Centennial Conference contest Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Gooding Arena.
