Fords fall in OT to Mighty Macs

IMMACULATA, Pa. - A nearly three week layoff didn't bother the Haverford College men's basketball team early in their non-conference game at Immaculata University Monday night but the host Mighty Macs battled back to defeat the visiting Fords, 65-60, in overtime.

Haverford (3-6) rocketed out of the gate leading from the opening tip to the halftime horn, building as large as a 12-point margin over the Mighty Macs before settling for a 29-20 lead at the intermission.

With 12:24 to play in the second half the Fords again led by a dozen, 37-25, but Immaculata (6-6) rallied with a 16-4 run to pull even at 41-41.

The hosts nabbed their first lead at 45-43 then held a 51-49 edge with 58 ticks left on the clock but Haverford's Doug Edelman slammed home a dunk with 38 seconds on the clock to pull the Fords back even. Immaculata held on for the final shot but missed a three-pointer before the buzzer sending the match-up into overtime.

Two early baskets in the extra period by the Fords put the visiting Scarlet and Black ahead but an 8-0 run by the home team salted away the game for the Mighty Macs who were playing in their second consecutive overtime thriller.

Four Fords reached double-digits in scoring. Bo Friddell put up 12 points while Cam Baker came off the bench adding 12 more to lead the Haverford offense. Sam Permutt pulled down a game-high eight rebounds but, fittingly, the two teams each registered 34 boards on the night.

Robert Siter spearheaded the winning effort for Immaculata with 18 points and Nelson Torres posted 16 more in the win.

The loss was the fourth in a row for Haverford (1-2 in Centennial Conference action) who will find the going tough in their next outing, a league game on the road against No. 17 Franklin & Marshall College (8-2, 2-1 CC) at 8 p.m., Wednesday night in Lancaster, Pa.
