Fords earn win in conference opener

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's basketball team earned a 67-62 victory over visiting Washington (Md.) College in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams Wednesday night on the Gooding Arena floor.

A quartet of Fords reached double-figures in scoring led by Bo Friddell's 17 points. Sam Permutt added 16, Cam Baker chipped in with 15 while Doug Edelman chimed in with a double-double scoring 12 points and ripping down a game-high 10 rebounds.

The margin between the two teams stayed within five points for much of the see-saw battle until Haverford (3-2, 1-0 CC) broke away from a 47-47 tie -- the 11th deadlock of the game -- when Ian Goldberg's three-pointer with 6:50 to play started a 8-0 Fords run.

Washington (2-3, 0-1 CC) never recovered as Haverford led the rest of the way, building their lead to as large as 11 before settling for the five point winning margin.

The Shoremen led at the half, 32-28, with lights out shooting hitting 52 percent from the floor including 5-of-9 from behind the three-point arc. For the game Washington shot 44 percent while the Fords were steady between the two halves hitting 42 percent over the opening 20 minutes then closing with 41 percent shooting for the second half.

Edelman and company helped rule the backboards for Haverford out rebounding Washington by a 43-30 count including limiting the Shoremen to just four offensive rebounds in the game. The Fords' defense was also criminal coming away with 11 steals to just four by the visitors.

Mark DeBoy hit a career-high 22 points for Washington in the loss. Kevin Breslin, 13 points, and Andrew Chambers with 10 also reached double-digits for the Shoremen.

Haverford continues conference play in its next outing Saturday night as Gettysburg College comes to town for an 8 p.m. showdown.
