Blue Jays down Fords in men's basketball

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's basketball team staged a second half rally Thursday afternoon against Johns Hopkins University but it wasn't enough as the Fords fell, 55-40, to the visiting Blue Jays in a Centennial Conference match-up at Gooding Arena.

Trailing 44-22 at the 8:25 mark of the second half, the Fords (4-9, 2-5 CC) reeled off a 16-3 run to cut the Blue Jay lead to single digits at 47-38 with just under three minutes to play.

Ian Goldberg's three-pointer kicked off the Haverford run and he scored two more in the streak. Teammate Sam Permutt put home three layups while Cam Baker added a three-pointer. Matt Palmer's jumper pulled the Fords to within nine.

Hopkins (7-6, 3-3 CC) was able to finally stall the Haverford come-back, though, and stretched its lead over the final minutes to 15 by the closing buzzer.

The Blue Jays took a 23-10 lead into the intermission on the back of four three-pointers – out of their nine made baskets – and 10 points off of nine Haverford turnovers. The Fords didn't help their own cause over the initial 20 minutes with 4-for-20 (20 percent) shooting from the floor.

Haverford heated up in the second stanza hitting 12 of their 29 shots (41 percent) but Hopkins again added 10 points off Fords turnovers.

Permutt hit for 11 of his team-high 16 points in the final 20 minutes for Haverford. Bo Friddell led the Fords on the glass pulling down eight rebounds.

Mike Henrici led the Blue Jays' attack with 16 points and eight boards while Andrew Farber-Miller added 13 points and pulled off the double-double registering a game-high 12 rebounds.

Another Centennial match-up awaits the Fords in their next game, a 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon contest at Gettysburg College.
