Opportunistic Fords bedevil Dickinson

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's basketball team made the most of the many turnovers granted by visiting Dickinson College in a 65-55 Centennial Conference victory Saturday afternoon.

The Fords (4-7, 2-3 CC) scored 39 points off 30 Red Devil turnovers in ending a five-game skid. Dickinson (0-10, 0-5 CC) also sent host Haverford to the foul line 25 times in the game compared with only 13 trips to the charity stripe by the visitors.

Behind a 10-point opening half from the Fords' Cam Baker along with nine more from Bo Friddell, Haverford was able to take a 26-21 lead into the locker rooms at the break.

Dickinson's Matt Dolan opened the second half scoring with a jumper that cut the lead to three but Sam Permutt and Friddell scored for Haverford to push the lead to seven at 30-23.

A 10-0 Red Devils run that moved the visitors ahead, 33-30, was a body blow to the Fords but the hosts tied the score on a Matt Palmer three-pointer to get up off the mat.

Three lead changes and two ties followed Palmer's trey then with Dickinson ahead by one, 41-40, Baker nailed a three-pointer at the 9:01 mark that put Haverford back in front and gave the hosts a lead they wouldn't relinquish the rest of the game.

Baker finished with a team-high 21 for the Fords while Permutt added 13 points, 11 of which came in the second half. Baker and Permutt each pulled down six rebounds apiece to lead Haverford on the boards.

The Red Devils were led by Dolan's double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds. Dickinson out rebounded the Fords by a 41-25 count but their turnovers and 13 Haverford steals dug too deep of a hole to climb from, extending a season-opening losing streak to 10 games.

Haverford jumps right back into league action with its next game, a 7 p.m. Tuesday night match-up against McDaniel College in Westminster, Md.
