Starters light up Shoremen

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – All five starters scored in double-figures for the Haverford College men's basketball team Wednesday night in the Fords' 80-75 Centennial Conference victory over host Washington College.

Led by Sam Permutt's 20 points and 11 rebounds, Haverford (7-12, 5-8 CC) completed the season sweep over the Shoremen (9-8, 7-6 CC) with Wednesday's win.

Along with Permutt, teammates Ian Goldberg (16 points), Matt Palmer (15), Bo Friddell (12) and Cam Baker (11) accounted for all but six of the team's 80 points. Doug Edelman registered the other six points along with ripping down nine rebounds for Haverford.

The last time the Fords broke the 80-point mark was three years ago in an 84-78 overtime win against Swarthmore College in February 2007. In non-overtime games, the last time Haverford scored 80-plus points was in a 93-75 victory over visiting Dickinson College in February 2006.

Wednesday night, Washington broke out in front quickly after the opening tip but Haverford nabbed their first lead of the game, 7-5, at the 14:24 mark of the half then took a 35-22 lead into the break after the first 20 minutes.

Haverford built their lead to as many as 18 points in second half action but had to withstand a furious comeback by the Shoremen.

Down by 11 with 3:19 to play, Washington rallied and pulled to within three on a Kevin Breslin three-pointer with just seconds left on the game-clock.

The Shoremen's strategy of putting the Fords on the free throw line in an attempt to cut into the 11 point lead nearly worked but Haverford hit nine of 10 from the line down the stretch capped by two from Palmer with one tick left after he was fouled following Breslin's final trey.

Haverford was hot all game hitting 51 percent from the floor, including 5-of-12 (47 percent) from behind the three-point arc, and 75 percent from the foul line. They also out rebounded the Shoremen by a 38-33 margin.

Breslin led all scorers in the game with 22 points in the Shoremen's loss.

The Fords will try to continue their late-season push for a Centennial playoff spot with another conference contest Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Gooding Arena against visiting McDaniel College. Haverford has won two in a row -- both league games -- and will try to exact a bit of revenge against the visiting Green Terror who defeated the Fords, 69-44, three weeks ago in Westminster, Md.
