Fords open season with victory over Lords

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Haverford College men's basketball team opened up the season with a 70-60 victory over Kenyon College Friday night in a non-conference tilt at Swarthmore College's Tarble Pavilion, opening the 18th Annual Equinox Classic hosted jointly by Haverford and Swarthmore.

Freshman Cam Baker led the way for the victorious Fords (1-0), hitting the 20-point mark in his first collegiate game. Bo Friddell added a career-best 17 points and Sam Permutt pulled off the double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Doug Edelman chipped in on the boards with eight rebounds while providing the aerial attack with a pair of dunks.

Twice in the early going of the second half the Lords leaped out to five point leads. Trailing 46-41 at the 11:44 mark, though, Haverford's Lekan O-Nicholson's jumper kicked off a 29-14 closing stretch that gave the Fords the season-opening win.

The first half consisted of severe hot and cold play from both teams.

Haverford broke ahead to a 12-8 lead five minutes in but Kenyon held the Fords scoreless over the next 8:34 with an 8-0 run to take a 16-12 lead. Permutt's 3-pointer finally broke the ice and initiated a 14-2 streak by the Fords to build an eight-point lead.

Kenyon came back with a 9-0 run to take a 27-26 lead in the final minute before Cam Baker's jumper closed out the half to give the Fords the lead at the intermission.

The second game of the night at Tarble sees the hosts from Swarthmore entertaining Middlebury College.

Haverford takes its turn at hosting the second half of the Equinox Saturday afternoon in Gooding Arena where Swarthmore and Kenyon (0-2) play in the early game followed by the Fords and Middlebury at 3 p.m.
