Fords fall to host Shoremen in Centennial men's basketball outing

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Four players reached double-digits in scoring for the Haverford College men's basketball team but turnovers and a strong stretch run by Washington College allowed the host Shoremen to down the Fords, 78-61, in a Centennial Conference contest Wednesday night.

Sam Permutt had a team-high 17 points for the Fords (2-4, 1-1 CC) leading Ian Goldberg (13 points), Brett Cohen (11) and Bo Friddell (10) into double-digit territory, but Washington (2-4, 1-1) used a game-high 19 points from Sal Schittino and 30 points off Haverford turnovers to pull out the win.

The Fords scored the first basket of the game and pushed that opening lead to a six-point margin at the 14:22 mark of the opening half.

However, a Schittino three-point field goal following a steal gave the hosts their first lead, 17-16, four minutes later.

The lead changed hands seven more times over the final 10 minutes of the half before the Shoremen's Kevin Breslin converted a three-point play with a foul shot after a made layup for the eighth lead change and a 36-35 Washington advantage heading into the intermission.

Washington broke out quickly to a six-point edge after returning to action but the Fords battled back to within two several times over the next nine minutes but were unable to pull even with the home team.

A Permutt jumper brought the Fords to within a basket at 53-51 with more than eight minutes remaining. Schittino hit a jumper than a three-pointer on consecutive trips down the floor, though, to end the final threat as the Shoremen stretched out their lead over the remaining minutes.

Haverford shot 43 percent from the floor compared to Washington's 41 percent, but the Fords committed 27 turnovers which the Shoremen were able to convert into 30 points hampering the visitor's come-back efforts.

A return to their home floor may be just what the doctor ordered for the Fords as they come back to Gooding Arena Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. to battle Gettysburg College in another Centennial contest.
