Permutt, Baker too much for Mighty Macs in non-conference victory

HAVERFORD, Pa. – A double-double from Sam Permutt and offensive help from Cam Baker pushed the Haverford College men's basketball team to a 71-63 non-conference victory over visiting Immaculata University Monday night in Gooding Arena.

Baker scored 20 points for the Fords (6-5) while Permutt ripped down 19 rebounds to go along with 24 points for his fourth double-double of the season.

The Mighty Macs, who were led by Rob Siter's 19 points, fall to 3-7 with the loss.

Haverford nabbed an early lead at 7-5 and, though Immaculata knotted things up at 22-22 later in the opening half, the Fords never trailed as they close out their season non-conference record with a 3-3 mark after Monday night's win.

The game was at the same time not as close as the score indicated, but also more hotly contested than the final eight-point margin may show.

The Fords closed out the opening half on a 13-4 run to open a 35-26 lead over the Mighty Macs at the break, then extended the margin to 16 barely three minutes into the second act.

The lead remained in double-digits past the midway point of the half when Immaculata began whittling away until closing to within three twice during the final four minutes.

The Fords, though, finally put an end to Immaculata's uprising, outscoring the visitors over the final 2:21 by an 8-3 count to pull out the win.

Haverford shot 47 percent from the floor and limited Immaculata to a 39 percent night. The Fords, with a lot of help from Permutt, won the battle on the glass with a 40-30 edge in rebounds.

Haverford leaps back into conference action with its next game, a 1 p.m. home contest this Saturday against visiting Dickinson College.
