Fords bomb way back into game, fall one bullet short at Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Haverford College men's basketball team bombed away from behind the arc at Gettysburg College, overcoming a double-digit halftime deficit only to fall one trey short, 76-73, to the hosts in Centennial Conference action Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 44-34 at the break, Haverford (9-7, 6-4 CC) battled back to take a 56-55 lead over the Bullets (13-4, 8-2) on Cam Baker's layup at the 12:15 mark of the second half.

The rally was spurred from beyond the arc as Louis Cipriano, Bo Friddell, Lekan O-Nicholson and Ian Goldberg each hit from outside the line before Baker's basket put the Fords out in front.

The advantage changed hands six more times over the next 10 minutes before Gettysburg's Andrew Powers put his team ahead for good on a layup with 1:22 remaining.

The Bullets led by five as the clock wound toward the buzzer but Cipriano buried a three to bring Haverford to within two. A quick foul on the in-bounds play put the Bullets at the free throw line where they sank one of two for the game's final three-point margin.

Both teams were hot from the floor as the Fords hit 53 percent of their shots, including 10 three-pointers, but the Bullets were a sizzling 59 percent on the day.

Haverford out rebounded the hosts, 25-24, and only turned the ball over two more times than did Gettysburg.

Powers proved to be hard to stop, though, as he registered a 30-point game for the Bullets. Two more teammates edged into double-digits but it was Powers' show that allowed the hosts to escape the furious Haverford rally.

Friddell led the Fords with 16 points and gathered in six rebounds. Baker and Cipriano went for 15 apiece while Goldberg provided 12 more. Cipriano and Goldberg were the main gunners for the Fords, each collecting a trio of three-pointers in the loss that ended a brief, two-game win streak.

On the glass, Haverford's Brett Cohen ripped down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Haverford welcomes Muhlenberg College to Gooding Arena at 8 p.m. Wednesday night for the first of three consecutive home games.
