Men's hoops scoops up first win of the fall in 64-51 Equinox Classic victory

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Led by sophomore Brett Cohen's double-double (20 points and 14 rebounds), the Haverford College men's basketball team secured their first win of the 2011-12 season, a 64-51 victoryin the 20th Annual Equinox Classic over Merchant Marine Academy at Gooding Arena. The Fords finished the Classic 1-1 after opening with a 73-71 overtime loss to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Friday, Nov. 18 at Swarthmore College's Tarble Pavilion.

Named to the all-tournament team were: Haverford senior Ian Goldberg, Merchant Marine's junior Frankie Wiseley, Swarthmore junior Will Gates and Coast Guard junior Greg Marshall and freshman David Anderson.

With the win over the Mariners, Haverford improves to 1-2 this season, while Merchant Marine suffered their first defeat as they fall to 2-1. Also helping the Haverford cause was senior Bo Friddell with 15 points, five boards and three steals. Merchant was led by sophomore Reed Buck's 10 points.

In the first half, the Ford defense forced 11 Merchant turnovers (and 14 total in the game). The Fords surged ahead with their largest lead of the contest at the half, running into the locker room with a 36-28 advantage. On the afternoon, the Fords shot 40 percent from field goal range.

The Mariners put up the first three buckets of the second half, as the Fords were held scoreless for four minutes, until sophomore Brett Cohen's free throw in the 16th minute. With the Mariners threatening at 37-36, junior Cam Baker banked one in to keep the home squad ahead. Baker registered nine points and six rebounds total. Cohen added another layup to once again fight off Merchant at 41-38.

The Mariners trailed for the majority of the contest, as the Fords built up their largest lead (and final score) to 13 at 64-51 with two minutes to go. In their next match-up, the Fords travel to Johns Hopkins University on Tuesday, Nov. 22 for a conference duel at 8 p.m.
