Goldberg earns All-Classic honors following split at NYU tournament

NEW YORK – Ian Goldberg led Haverford College's men's basketball team in scoring for the second night in a row at the New York University Holiday Classic, but the Fords were unable to defeat the host Violets in Tuesday evening's contest falling 67-50 in a non-conference battle at the Coles Sports Center.

Goldberg scored 16 points and added three assists in the Haverford (3-8) loss. NYU's Kyle Stockmal and Andy Stein combined for 44 points to help keep the Violets (9-0) undefeated.

NYU broke out on top early in Tuesday's night's game but a Goldberg layup following a Cam Baker steal drew the Fords to within three, 18-15, at the five-minute mark after trailing by as many as eight earlier in the half.

NYU AD Christopher Bledsoe with Ian Goldberg That three-point deficit would be as close as Haverford would get, though, as the Violets broke away with an 11-0 run before taking a 33-20 lead into the intermission. NYU iced the game by opening the second half with a 17-6 spurt.

Louis Cipriano joined Goldberg in double-figures adding 11 points for the Fords. The battle on the glass was narrowly won by the Violets, 37-33, but Haverford's Brett Cohen led all players with a game-high 16 boards for the night.

The Fords' bench added 16 points, compared to just four from the NYU reserves, and Haverford also owned an edge in second-chance points, 15-4.

Goldberg -- who scored 15 Monday night in the Fords' four-point win over Regis College -- was joined on the all-classic team by NYU's Stockmal, Stein and Ryan Tana, and Clarkson University's Marques Charlton.

Haverford jumps back into Centennial Conference action with its next game, a Saturday afternoon road game at 2 p.m. in Carlisle, Pa., against host Dickinson College.
